As of May 2025, North Carolina is on the cusp of fully implementing Remote Online Notarization (RON) for real estate closings. While the state passed legislation to permanently allow RON back in 2022, the rollout has faced delays.
In the meantime, the state has extended Emergency Video Notarization (EVN) provisions through June 30, 2025, allowing notaries to perform certain acts via video conference . However, full RON—which includes secure identity verification and electronic record-keeping—is not yet in effect.
Real estate professionals across North Carolina are eagerly anticipating the full implementation of RON. The ability to conduct closings remotely is expected to streamline transactions, especially for out-of-state clients and those with tight schedules. While attorney supervision remains a requirement for residential closings, RON will add a layer of convenience and efficiency to the process.
As a real estate agent, I'm looking forward to the benefits RON will bring to our industry. My buyers and sellers who are not residing locally at the time of sale, will have a much easier time closing the deal. The flexibility and time savings it offers will be a welcome advancement for both agents and clients alike.
